Information about the Community Access Program (CAP)
CAP, Industry Canada's Community Access Program, works with rural Canadian
communities to take advantage of new
communication technologies. CAP's goal is to foster economic, social and
cultural growth in Canada. All CAP sites are community-based, with a variety of provincial, territorial and
national partnerships supporting these local initiatives.
The CAP program was launched in 1994 in the hopes that 10,000 public access
sites to the Internet can be created and maintained so that Canadians can use the Internet and take advantage of this
powerful tool. With affordable access to the Internet individuals and communities are able to develop
information technology skills, exchange ideas with others, research information, post community events or connect with
government programs and services.
Each access point is staffed with skilled and knowledgeable staff to make your
Internet experience as simple and as enjoyable as it can be. They will answer
your questions and guide you through every step.
On PEI there is a CAP site located every 10 minutes
making us the most "connected" province in Canada. As the program continues to evolve, so too, does the importance of this initiative at
the community level. Recognizing the potential of technology, the provincial government created the Department of
Development & Technology to focus efforts on
the continued growth within the IT sector. CAP centers will play an important
role in the educational aspects of advancing this cause. Together with partners from Industry Canada and
the private sector, CAP will continue to pursue projects and initiatives to address the need for further
awareness and skill development in Canada's most connected province.
